Pit Bull is a fighting dog breed that originated in the 19th century in England, Scotland, and Ireland as a descendant of bulldogs and terriers that were bred for hunting cattle, pigs, and sheep, where they were used to grab and hold semi-feral livestock. Traditionally, the term has been used to refer to some of its sub-breeds, like the Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1898 and named it the American Pit Bull Terrier. Another international body that acknowledges the breed is the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA), whose goal is to encourage the desirable qualities of the breed, including loyalty, dedication, and athleticism.
