Spaniel as a dog breed had been found in art and literature for almost over 50 years. Spaniels initially found in England were referred to mostly as the English Cocker Spaniel. During the mid-19th century, the types of Cocker Spaniel became more specific depending upon the weight of their body.
Since they are a very small breed, they were titled a “Toy” sized lineage in the 1840 Encyclopedia of Rural Sports where their lineage could grow to be a springer they stated.
In the period between the 1850s and 1860s, due to the Royal family of England’s love for dogs, other types of Cockers were seen including Welsh Springer Spaniels and Devonshire Cockers. During World War II, only the English Cocker Spaniel managed to be the most known and bred Spaniel which won multiple competitions during the war period.
The American Cocker Spaniel can be seen in the late 19th century to retrieve quails and woodcocks during hunting. The American Cocker Spaniel is shorter in size and snout. They have longer ears which are prone to ear infections and need to be groomed differently compared to English Cocker Spaniels.
